Introduction

National Centre for Disease Control (Kala- azar Unit), Patna Branch ( Bihar)

To investigate possible causes of reappearance of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) and other aspects of epidemiology and Control, NCDC Patna branch was established in the year 1976.

Mandate of the Branch:

  • To carry out detailed entomological studies on the presence, distribution, population dynamics of Kala โ€“ azar vector , dynamics of transmission and vector control measures.
  • To undertake detailed parasitological surveys to assess the magnitude of problem in the various KA affected districts.
  • To recommend suitable drug therapy and vector control strategy.
  • To develop trained manpower for the effective surveillance and control of Kala-azar.

Activities Undertaken in the Branch:

  • Maintenance of colonies of Sand fly (Phlebotomus argentipes) in the branch for monitoring insecticide efficacy and early detection of resistance patterns.
  • Monitoring sand fly density during pre- and post-IRS activities in Kala-azar affected districts of Bihar.
  • Collection of Phlebotomus argentipes from endemic areas of Patna (Bihta, Phulwari Sharif & Fathua) and Vaishali district in collaboration with CME & VM, NCDC Delhi, and transport to NCDC Delhi for colony maintenance.
  • Liaison with State health authorities on technical issues related to vector-borne diseases, particularly Encephalitis and Kala-azar.
  • Participation in technical meetings/trainings organized by State Health authorities / ICMR on vector-borne diseases, particularly Kala-azar and Lymphatic Filariasis.
  • Entomological surveillance for AES/JE vectors in endemic districts of North Bihar.
  • Entomological surveillance of dengue vectors in urban areas of dengue-affected districts.
  • Collaboration with NCVBDC (earlier NVBDCP) to review implementation of Kala-azar state/district action plans and other vector-borne disease initiatives.
  • Training of District VBD officers conducted by CSIR, NEERI, Nagpur during Sep 2023 at Patna.
  • Training of M.Sc Public Health Entomology (PHE) students of ICMR-RMRI, Patna on LF Elimination Programme during Sep 2023.
  • Investigation of outbreaks of various communicable and non-communicable diseases in the state as needed.
  • Monitoring and supervision of health programs under Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra (VBSY) in ten districts of Bihar.
  • Supervision and monitoring in identified districts as part of the 100-day National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) Campaign.
  • Resurvey of Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH) prevalence in seven identified districts of Bihar in collaboration with DPD, NCDC Delhi.
