Activities undertaken in the Branch


Activities undertaken in the Branch

  • Plague Surveillance activity commenced from the year 1992.
  • Trapping of wild, peridomestic, and commensal rodents.
  • Collection of organ samples for further laboratory investigation.
  • Collection and identification of fleas from rodents and computation of flea indices.
  • As per IHR 2005, NCDC Coonoor team has carried out pre-monsoon and post-monsoon entomological surveys for vectors of Yellow Fever, Dengue, Malaria & Chikungunya at Tuticorin International Seaport and Trichy International Airport.

Activities undertaken in Field Station

  • To study the epidemiology of major communicable diseases prevalent in this area.
  • To assist in investigations on the outbreak of communicable diseases in this region.
  • To maintain cyclic colonies of vector mosquito species and supply them to academic institutions for experimental purposes.
  • To carry out pre-monsoon and post-monsoon entomological surveys for vectors of Yellow Fever, Dengue, Malaria & Chikungunya at Tuticorin International Seaport and Trichy International Airport.
  • Plague surveillance activities in erstwhile plague-endemic areas of Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu.

Mosquito Colonies Maintained

The cyclic colonies of the following mosquitoes are being maintained at the Mettupalayam Field Station of this Branch:

  • Culex quinquefasciatus (Mettupalayam strain)
  • Aedes aegypti (Mettupalayam strain)

Specimen Supply

The specimens such as mosquito eggs, larvae, and adults are issued to students of various teaching and research institutions on demand.
