Microbiology – Respiratory Viruses Division and TB Division
Mandate of the Division:
Mandate of RV Division:
  • To provide Referral diagnostic services for Influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and other Respiratory Viral Infections.
  • To provide Referral diagnostic services for diseases due to Teratogenic viruses namely Rubella virus, CMV, HSV 1&2 (RCH).
  • Laboratory investigation of outbreaks of Influenza and other Respiratory Viruses.
  • To provide support to IDSP Influenza Laboratory Network by coordination of work of 12 network laboratories under Influenza Surveillance Programme of IDSP as the Nodal Laboratory of the network and lab for Pan Respiratory Virus surveillance.
  • Laboratory has been ensuring quality testing in the laboratory by participating regularly in WHO Global EQAS for SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza testing with attainment of high score consistently.
Mandate of TB Lab:
  • Diagnosis & Screening for Tuberculosis on clinical samples such as Sputum /Tissue/urine/pus/CSF etc. by AFB smear and Microscopy.
  • Diagnosis of Tuberculosis on clinical samples by Solid Culture (Isolation of Mycobacterium).

  • RV Division provides Technical inputs related to Respiratory viruses on online NCDC website IEC publications :
    • Technical Guidelines on Seasonal Influenza H1N1 (joint effort with IDSP and other experts from ministry, medical colleges etc.), available on MoHFW website and IDSP website, i.e Guidelines for Sample Collection ; Guidelines for laboratory procedures for detection of Influenza virus ; Checklist for labs for initiation of Influenza testing ; Guidelines for patient categorization ; Guidelines on use of masks ; Guidelines for clinical protocol ; Guidelines for Providing Home Care; Seasonal Influenza Death audit format ; Individual Patient Reporting format.
